Interview with Jr. Auxiliary members during their yard sale    26 Feb 2011 @ 0900 hrs
On Friday the 25th of February, the Jr. Auxiliary held a 2-day Yard Sale to benefit the Phoenix Children's Hospital. This medical center is completely dedicated to children and is one of the ten largest children's hospitals in the country and provides specialty and sub-specialty inpatient, outpatient, trauma, emergency and urgent care to children and families in Arizona and throughout the Southwest.

Shelby Heinink and her sister, Savannah (a.k.a., Little Savannah) have been members of the Jr. Auxiliary for approx 3 yrs. This youth group has 5 active members, with 20 more supporters in the background (so to speak…). Coni Moore, the Unit 62 Junior  Chairwoman, offered her assistance (and yard) to help raise money and awareness for the children's hospital.
When I asked Savannah & Shelby why they joined the Jr. Auxiliary, they said that they wanted to get involved in the community.

It was estimated that well over 200 people stopped at the yard sale. And, over the course of the 2-day event, the Jr. Auxiliary was able to collect $501. The money was  given to the Auxiliary treasurer who, in turn, wrote a $600 check to the Children's Hospital. The check presentation was held on the 5th  of April 2011, which coincides with the American Legions Children & Youth Month program. Dave Broyles  | click here for the pictures |

On March 27, 2011, the 5th Annual Golf Tournament was held at Sun City Country Club, a most accommodating establishment. But, it wasn't always held here…
Julian states that this started around 2007 as a memorial golf tournament to honor those Post 62 Legion members who had passed on and whom also loved the game of golf.  It also became a Legion fundraiser to help with Legion programs associated with the Youth and Children Month (April).

Each year the number of players (Post members and guests) that participated grew from a low of 72 to a high of 170.
The style of golf used this day is known as a "shotgun" start - a way to start a tournament in which all groups of players tee off simultaneously from different holes. If there are 18 groups of foursomes in a tournament, then each hole on the course will serve as the starting hole for a different group. A shotgun start allows for a tournament to be completed in the time it normally takes one group to finish 18 holes.
The term "shotgun start" comes from the first known use of such a starting format.  Walla Walla (Wash.) Country Club head pro Jim Russell fired off a shotgun to sound the start of play to golfers waiting on tees around the course at a tournament in May 1956.

Julian not only organized the tournament and helped to obtain gifts and prizes, he also participated in the tournament.  And, when it was all over, there was the awarding of the prizes and a small dinner afterwards.
The end result was that the tournament raised $2,400.
Thank you, Julian Lusco, for all your hard work.
