Graduation Day 2011
Graduation Day is, in simple words, the day of graduating or receiving an academic degree upon completion of one's studies. For a student, it is that special day when he/she graduates from high school and is awarded with the academic degree of a "graduate".
It is one of the most important moments in a student's life as it marks a transition from one stage in his/her educational life to another. Hence, the graduation ceremony is attended by parents, friends and well-wishers of a person. It is a moment of pride for a student as well as the parents who look on with a sense of achievement as an academic degree is conferred on their child.
Most of us would agree that the days we spent in high school were certainly the best days of our lives. It was in school that we made our first friends, competed to excel, hoped for places in the sports teams, and learned our first lessons about life.
Almost everyone at Post 62 knows Austin and Savannah. They are two of the hardest working teenagers at the Post. They attend a lot of the different Post functions to lend a hand where two or more are needed. I actually believe they have been at the Post more times than most members. It's been said that children make the family, and these two have been a part of the Post 62 family for quite a while.
Savannah has been a Jr. Aux member for nearly 5 years, and is just finishing her term as Jr. Aux Pres. She was also a Page for Doris Thiess…and she plans on maintaining her membership with the Auxiliary.
Savannah graduated from Tolleson Union High School, Class of 2011. She also graduated from University High School, taking courses which give her college credit. Her plans are to attend Northern Arizona University (NAU) this fall. Her major is Psychology. She would like to see kids with behavior problems helped with the use of horses (one of Savannahs many passions)…a type of therapy. She loves horses, boating, camping, motorcycles, and swimming. .
Austin has been a SAL member for nearly 5 yrs. He was also the Sgt-at-Arms two years ago. He graduated from Copper Canyon High School. When Austin wasn't helping out in the kitchen, he could be found playing pool. Austin is still evaluating his options. For the time being, he is on "tour" visiting family and friends.
Both enjoy the time they've spent at the Legion, and meeting all its members. Both enjoy helping out, and have "adopted" several members, whom they are close to, as "god parents". By Dave Broyles
